Kamala Harris matches the previous high for vice presidential runoffs in the US Senate.

On Wednesday, U.S. Vice President Kamala Harris achieved a significant milestone by matching the historical high of 31 votes cast by a vice president in the Senate to break ties. This notable event took place during a vote approving the appointment of lawyer Kalpana Kotagal to the nation's Equal Employment Opportunities Commission.

The vice president of the United States has two formal duties: to succeed the president in the event of their death or resignation, and to preside over the Senate. This gives the vice president the authority to break ties in the 100-seat body.

During the previous legislative session, when Democrats and Republicans held an equal number of seats in the Senate—50 each—Harris's prerogative to break ties played a significant role. As Chuck Schumer, the head of the Democratic majority in the Senate, highlighted today, Harris's vote was crucial in enacting key policies of the Joe Biden administration, such as the Inflation Reduction Act and the American Rescue Plan.

Chuck Schumer praised Harris for executing her functions with supreme excellence. He also emphasized the Senate's crucial role in confirming federal judges, an area where Harris's vote has proven pivotal.

Despite having fewer seats than the Republicans in the Senate, with three of their members being independent, the progressives currently hold an advantage of one senator. With Harris matching the previous high for tiebreakers just over halfway through the four-year Biden Administration, it is likely that she will surpass the previous record.

Vice President Kamala Harris's ability to break ties in the Senate has played a significant role in enacting key policies and confirming federal judges. With her recent accomplishment of matching the previous high for vice presidential tiebreakers, Harris continues to make a mark in the US Senate and contribute to the Biden administration's goals.
